American Clay – Reviving Green Concepts From Our Ancient Past

american-clayDating back to our cave dwelling years, man has been building green apparently unknowingly, utilizing just the dirt below his feet to construct and fabricate using earthen plasters.

Today, American Clay is resurrecting these ancient sustainable concepts, originating centuries ago, to produce one of the most healthy and environmentally friendly building materials known at this time.

Together with it’s longevity, durability, recycled content and zero VOC emissions, earthen plasters contain what appear almost magical healing characteristics, by releasing negative ions into the air. Negative ions are believed to increase Serotonin levels, helping alleviate both depression and stress while boosting energy levels. Normal ion count in fresh country air is around 2,000 – 4,000 negative ions per cubic centimeter, at Yosemite it’s over 100,000 negative ions. Sadly, in most homes and working environments it is below 600. Earthen plasters can increase negative ion count 10 – 20 times in an average indoor environment and improve indoor air quality (IAQ) tremendously.

So if you are looking for a non toxic, repairable, moister controlling, non dusting, mold and fade resistant alternative to paint and stucco for your walls and ceilings, you may want to investigate using American Clay. Currently offering a selection of 3 plasters in 43 different tempting shades, as well as colour matching services, it just could be the most healthy choice to gain the texture, warmth and tone you’ve been eager to restore.

Don’t miss American Clay on YouTube to learn even more about their materials and applications!

A big shout out and thank you to Phil Ponce and Painted Earth Finishes for the use of his work and images!

Merida-Natural-Fiber-Floor-Covering

Merida-Natural-Fiber-Floor-Covering-SisalBased in Boston, one of my most favorite cities in the world, Merida Meridian is enhancing the quality of life throughout their community. Defining sustainability in a much more comprehensive fashion, Merida pursues to forge beyond just environmental conservation and being green, while manufacturing some of the most distinctive and sophisticated floor coverings on the market.

Merida has been promoting and supporting causes affiliated with the arts and education from their inception. Working with Outward Bound, American Textile History Museum, and Artists for Humanity; in addition to continued neighborhood involvement and partnerships with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, and even a homeless shelter in Boston called Pine Street Inn.

It seems pretty apparent that Merida’s company culture and core values are still held with steadfast resolve, and I always find it refreshing to see an organization who cares enough to show a personal interest in their community and give back whenever they can.

With an extensive and diverse selection of natural and environmentally friendly fibers such as abaca, hemp, jute, paper, seagrass, sisal and wool; along with the capacity for complete customization of size, shape, border and edge finishes. Your odds are quite favorable that Merida Meridian will be able to meet your requirements when aspiring to formulate just the right visual interest in any room of your home or flat.
